Payne stood on the front porch sweeping the bricks. The grit that built up on them seemed to come back faster and faster. He leaned on his broom and sighed softly. It'd been three days since he left Hayden alone in his bed and he spent every hour—every minute—thinking about how he'd hurt the prince. Each time he thought about it, his heart broke a little more. He promised Hayden he would marry him and yet, he ran off without so much as a goodbye after what had been incredible sex.

Out of the corner of his eye, he saw a group of people turning to make their way up the walk to the house. He squinted a little until a face he recognized came into view. Dropping the broom, he ran into the house, calling for his stepmother at the top of his lungs. He took a few deep breaths when she and her daughters ran into the room, all clearly scared something was wrong.

"The prince is coming," he said in between breaths. He found the look of shock that came over her face somewhat comical. No doubt she was thinking he was coming to see her and her girls. She had no clue of the night Payne had spent with Hayden.

"Dear God, what is he doing here?" She turned to her daughters. "You must hurry and make yourselves presentable to the prince. One of you must have caught his eye at the ball and he's come to ask for your hand."

The two girls immediately ran up the stairs, bickering about what they were going to wear.

"You," Andrea said, setting her full attention on Payne, "you stay out of sight. I would hate for the prince to see someone as lowly as you here."

"And what if he's coming to see me?" Payne challenged.

The woman laughed out. "And why would he be doing that? I think they have enough people to clean the palace. They don't need you." They heard a knock on the door. "Shoo!"

Payne walked from the room, but not going so far he couldn't hear what was going on. When he heard Andrea open the door, he peeked around the corner, taking care to stay out of sight.

"Your Highness," she said as she curtsied.

Hayden looked to one of the men in his group. "Where are we?" he whispered.

"The Grant residence. Alexander and Andrea Grant. Three children, Kori, Gia and…"

"Uh, it's just my husband, myself, and my daughters," Andrea broke in, making sure there was no mention of Payne.

"Then there is no reason for us to stay here. We're looking for a young man," Hayden said, ready to leave.

Andrea bit her lip. "Wait—we also have a boy here who does the cooking and cleaning."

Hayden turned and raised his eyebrow. "May I speak with him?"

Andrea nodded. "Yes, Your Highness." She quickly spun around and Payne saw her smile quickly turn to a frown. "Payne!"

Payne walked into the room. "Yes, ma'am?"

"The prince would like to speak with you."
